Many people adore the sea, but what do we really know about it? The initiative aims to make people aware of what the sea does for us and how we can do more to protect it. Tackling litter, but also the protection of nature, renewable energy and sustainable fish are the foundations in the year of the North Sea. This also contributes to the United Nations’ sustainable development goal ‘life below water’.
Everyone can contribute with some simple activities: such as taking your litter with you, using a drinking bottle and reusable shopping bag, buying unpackaged fruit and vegetables, choosing green energy, sustainable fish, and ecological cleaning and care products. The organisation asks you to share your activities and tips with the hashtag #YearoftheNorthSea2018 via Twitter and Facebook.
The year of the North Sea is an initiative by WWF BE, Natuurpunt, Ghent University, ILVO, KBIN/OD Natuur, Province of West Flanders, FPS Public Health, FPS Mobility and the state secretary for the North Sea.
